The UK and US have established a major trade agreement that will ensure zero duties on UK drug exports being sold in the American market.

Agreement Details of the Deal

As part of the deal, the UK has agreed to boost funding on drugs through the public health system. This move ensures that duties on these key exports will be held at zero for a duration of the next three years.

This deal comes after earlier statements to significantly raise duties on patented drug products, with potential rates mentioned reaching one hundred percent.

"This arrangement with the United Kingdom bolsters the global environment for new treatments and introduces long-overdue balance to transatlantic pharmaceutical trade," an announcement noted.

Trade Impact

Pharmaceuticals represent one of the UK's largest goods shipped to the US, which is easily the biggest destination for leading UK drugmakers.

Statistics indicate that in the 12 months to the end of the third quarter, the UK sold pharmaceutical products totaling £11.1bn to the US. This amount accounted for nearly one-fifth of total UK exports in that timeframe.

"This deal safeguards jobs, stimulates investment and paves the way for the UK to emerge as a global hub for biotech and pharma," a government official remarked.

Specific UK Commitments

The pact includes several notable changes from the United Kingdom:

  • Higher Cost Ceiling: The UK will lift the affordability limit at which it considers new therapies to be unaffordable by 25%.
  • Boosted Medicine Funding: There is a goal to double total health service expenditure on medicines from 0.3% of GDP to 0.6% over the coming ten years.
  • Rebate Cap: The sum manufacturers must pay back to the NHS to prevent overspending will be capped at fifteen percent. Last year, rebates exceeded 20%.

Recent Tensions

The deal takes place against a ongoing tension between the sector and the British authorities over drug pricing and NHS adoption.

This friction were intensified by arguments that American patients were paying several times more for the same drugs than consumers in the Britain and the EU.

In recent months, several major drug company projects in the UK have been halted or abandoned, while substantial expansions have been pledged toward US facilities.

A senior figure stated that the NHS had to invest a greater share on medicines, noting that its budget allocation on drugs had shrunk as a share of its total funding over the past decade.
