Pick of the Week
This Satirical Thriller
Director Coralie Fargeat's bold critique examines the tyranny of female beauty along with the perceived horrors of growing older. Demi Moore offers an inspired performance playing Elisabeth, a mature film star demoted to starring in a fitness program on television. Forced aside by her slimy boss Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she seeks out an enigmatic and terrifying procedure known as the Substance. This creates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, culminating in a steadily more parasitic dynamic among both women. October 17th, Paramount+
The Woman in Cabin 10 Film
This classic whodunit thriller features the talented actress as Laura, an ace reporter who takes some time off from reporting on international wars to join an opulent ship accompanied by an ailing wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her spouse, and other affluent individuals. However when an unknown lady goes overboard overnight and all passengers insists she wasn't real, Laura's investigative instincts take over. Streaming currently, Netflix
Presence
The acclaimed director pushes his directorial skills in this innovative supernatural story captured wholly through the eyes of a ghost. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah and her distressed teen Chloe occupies their new suburban house, the lens – AKA the Presence – follows them around. Chloe seems sensing the poltergeist, and it seems protective of her. Yet what is the reason? It's a fun idea that doesn't outstay its welcome, with a twist you might not see coming. Saturday 11 October, multiple showings, the Sky channel
This Self-Referential Film
Nicolas Cage embraces his unique fame in this self-referential adventure. He plays a narcissistic celebrity called Nicolas Cage who agrees to a $1m payday to visit a birthday party at a Mediterranean location for the rich superfan Javi. Contacted by the CIA to gather intel on the alleged criminal, his “nouveau shamanic acting ability” comes in handy. October 11th, 9pm, Channel 4
The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's contained scarefest remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has rendered the children anxious. After Finney gets captured by the kidnapper and locked up in a cellar, he fears a fatal end. But the disconnected phone in the room repeatedly calls, with eerie communicators giving advice, as the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister might rescue him. An effective horror. October 11th, late evening, on Film4
The Eyes of Tammy Faye
In the battle between faith and wealth, the victory is clear for Mammon in Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top biopic of the disgraced televangelist plus her lawbreaking partner. The actor portrays the venal Jim, who states at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. He and Tammy Faye begin monetising the people's religious faith. It's a spectacle of bad interior design, excessive cosmetics and insincerity, however Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4
The Spy Mystery
This period's additional entry from the filmmaker presents a intelligence thriller as tight like the turtlenecks used by Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission to identify a mole inside the organization out of five possibilities – among them is his own wife. Both actors are experts of calm composure, leading to a delightful mental battle of fact versus fiction unfolds. Additional actors take part the intelligent intelligence fun. October 17th, various showings, Sky Cinema Premiere
