Seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on this week, accused for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the network was behind attacks on locations in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Court proceedings and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in Budapest during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honour” that draws far-right participants from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated tools, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, emerged as a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the United States, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have already been convicted or remain detained.”
